A census is the largest statistical data collection project carried out by the Statistical Office. The Population and Housing Census is designed to give a comprehensive count of the country’s population, its housing stock, demographic profile and the socio-economic characteristics of its people.
Population and Housing Censuses have been conducted in St. Vincent and the Grenadines since 1871; but, the first modern census was undertaken in 1945. Since then, censuses have been undertaken virtually every ten years: 1960, 1970, 1980, 1991 and 2001. This decennial census of Population and Housing, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was launched on June 12th 2012, in accordance with the Census and Statistics Act, No. 24 (1983).
